The main use for Karils is Magic Defence and I believe it is the strongest Magic Defence armor without a Melee Attack negative, which is why you might see it used more for Melee than for Ranged.

Black d hide is even more op for its price, but karils isn't exactly expensive. Karils skirt is like 2m and black dhide is 8k. Black dhide has better melee defense where as Karils has slightly better range and mage defense by around 15% in terms of numbers. The cost difference between black dhide and Karils is 99.6%. Kbow is 106gp per shot, blowpipe is 77gp per shot and 1/5 chance of breaking a dart. So 77gp + 20% of the price of whatever dart you're using, with mith = 11.8+77 = 89gp per shot. Blowpipe with mith darts is significantly higher in both damage per second and damage per shot than the kbow (67 range strength versus 55 range strength).

Personally I really like Crystal Bow. The massive range (10 squares vs rcb 7 vs karil 8) is really nice to have and the thing is pretty damn accurate (100 vs rcb 90 and karils 84) with decent damage splats (78 range str vs karils 55 and rcb addy bolts 100/mith 82).
