In the summer of 2002, one of my author friends asked what metaphor described my novel-writing process. I sat down and drilled out a quick list of the steps I use to write a novel. I used the metaphor of the "Snowflake fractal" that I learned when I was a PhD student in the UC Berkeley physics department back in the 1980s.
